Once the survey instrument has been finalized, Statistical Reasoning will
custom program and posted the survey to the Internet for data collection. Survey
programming activities include:
- Scripting of finalized questionnaire content.
- Programming of questionnaire controls (e.g.,
skip patterns, randomizations, rotations, back references, filters,
validation, etc.).
- Where many of these controls are required, a
multi-form format will be adapted.
- Setup of the data storage and output formats.
- Testing of the questionnaire, survey web site,
and administration procedures.
More often than not, the online survey would require respondent
authentication so as to prevent possible 'ballot-stuffing'. As such,
survey programming activities would also include:
- Configuration of administration parameters
(i.e., password-protected administration procedures and interview suspension
capabilities).
In situations where you, the client, can provide the 'finalized' survey
content, Statistical Reasoning will peruse the various types of questions asked
and the logic/routing requirements of the instrument.
An understanding of the overall layout of the survey will help SR determine
whether a one question per screen or multiple questions per screen approach
should be used. Similarly, understanding the overall structure of the
survey will help SR determine whether grid and matrix formats should be used for
ranking/rating questions and the like.
In short, SR will help determine the best approach to take in programming the
online survey, one which that not only functions efficiently via the web, but
which fully leverages the interactive capabilities of the Internet.
